[Askalibrarianqa] New Reading schedule for Dec.

Hi all,

If we are starting to get certain types of questions, maybe we can share
this with the knowledge base work group. They may have an interest
creating knowledge base entries out of these questions, or at least
developing a process for identifying these types of question for some
form of knowledge base inclusion.

Subject: [Askalibrarianqa] New Reading schedule for Dec.

Hi Everyone,

I went ahead and read a lot of chats for Dec. Then I divided those
that were left and assigned us all about an equal amount of chats
(around 70-75). I've attached that schedule.

I think only Joyce and I have voted so far for Nov. 04. Please correct
me if I'm wrong.

In Paula's last email with her choices for November 04, she brings up
some very good points that I have noticed also. We are seeing a lot of
good chats, but how do we spotlight chats that are challenging in some
way. I think we need to discuss some possible changes in our criteria
for choosing best chats, or find other categories to present chats that
are good in other ways. My recent readings showed me that we are getting
certain kinds of questions. Here are some examples: business questions
about starting a business in Florida where the librarians have found the
state web sites that have helped people with forms, state and federal
tax questions, plus obituary questions that were handled well. It would
be helpful to other librarians to see an example of a chat like these
and how they are fielded. Another issue that I noticed was how some
students have logged on with a list of questions about Florida state
government and kind of got the librarian to answer their list of
questions. I did see one chat where the librarian diplomatically handled
a student who was trying to get her to get the assignment. I'll try and
find that one again to bring forward.

Again, I hope we can meet at FLA on April 12 with Jennifer and Vince to
talk more about these issues, but if not, we have email. We are the ones
reading the chats currently so we see these issues. If we continue
reading as we are doing, I am hoping that we can spot more than just
excellent chats, but also spot problem areas and other issues. It will
be important for us to catch up, which looks promising since Jennifer
will be recruiting more librarians to help with the readings.

Thanks for sticking with it,

Pat

These were Paula's original comments:

I think everyone is doing a tremendous job at answering an amazing
variety of questions on Ask-a-Librarian. It's always fun when you get a
question that you know exactly how to answer because it is something you
know about, but it is sometimes quite challenging to track down
information that is elusive. Other times it is challenging because the
person you are working with is vague and you have to ask a lot of
questions, or they are in a hurry and you feel rushed to find a good
answer. We always look our best when we have a patron that asks a good
question about something we know about and our computer works perfectly.
I like to choose those chats, but I also look for the ones where someone
has done a nice job on a difficult question or dealt with a difficult
person, or put forth some extra effort. Just wanted to share with you
what I was thinking about since I won't be able to meet face to face
with anyone in Jacksonville.
