Oh Paula, you don't realize just how timely this for me today! I just
attended a workshop this morning hosted by a detective from our local
police department called "Verbal Judo" on dealing with the public. This
was like icing on the cake! Thanks for sharing. :-)

Subject: [Askalibrarianqa] Dealing with the public
Hi All,
I am passing along these videos of dealing with the public because we
deal with the public too. Thankfully not in the same way, but we still
have to answer (seemingly) obvious questions, deal politely with rude
people, and do this in a professional manner.
As far as using Google to answer questions, I do it all the time because
often it is the best place to find the information the patron is looking
for. If they didn't need our help they wouldn't be asking. It seems
simple to us to find an authoritative website, but most people don't
have any idea how to search, what words to use, or how to determine
which websites have credible information.
I did see some chats that seemed like they really didn't put much effort
into helping the patron and I was disappointed in the person for not
trying harder, but at the same time, I don't know what else was going
on. Maybe they were feeling pressured to be quick because so many new
questions kept popping up.
In the future I will send some questionable chats to Diana and Jennifer.
I've thought of sending some, and then second guess myself thinking it
probably wasn't that bad.
Just some thoughts,
Paula
