Again I am going to have to beg for some more time, but Monday April 30
is fine. I worked this weekend so I have a short day tomorrow and will
be off all day Friday.
I do have an avatar up already, but I haven't had a chance to work on a
bio. I don't mind posting a real photo to the workgroups and
librarians, but I'm not sure I want it out there for the whole
population to see.
The "Google" topic is a very interesting one. I use it myself. It
definitely has its place. In fact, I am going to another NEFLIN
workshop next week called "To Google or Not to Google." My issue was
not with librarians who use it, rather with librarians who only use it
and don't really even help the patron. They tell the patron to "just
Google it." If the patron had those skills already, they would not be
asking for our help. I have already referred my more recent concerns to
Diana.
BTW, I want to thank you again Pat for keeping us in order. I really do
appreciate you and the reminders. It's so helpful because I'm sure we
all get caught up in all our other duties, and I just wanted you (and
Joyce) to know you are doing a wonderful job as chairpeople.

Subject: [Askalibrarianqa] Ready to Vote
Hi Everyone,
I think we are ready to vote now on our Exemplary Chats. Let's try
and have votes in by Friday, April 27. If that is too difficult, we'll
shoot for Monday April 30 late in the day.
I have not had time to work on my biography, but I hope some of you
have started. For me, I think, I would prefer a photo and not an avatar.
I have a photo of myself on my Angel courses. My hope is that I look
non-threatening so the students feel comfortable calling or emailing me!
Avatars are fine, but I really am not that clever to think of one. I
only want my photo on the page for the QA Workgroup and not in the Chat
box. Let's trade biographies among ourselves when they are done. We did
this earlier and it was very helpful to know what areas of interest each
QA member had.
I'm sorry to rattle on about the "Google" issue, but perhaps in
training, it could be emphasized that students who are using Google or
any patrons can be shown how to narrow into .edu websites for research
material or .gov websites when looking for statistical material. Diana
did an excellent workshop here at SPC on how to maximize results using
Google.
Our LIS2004 class Introduction to Internet Research concentrates a
lot on teaching students to "mine the Internet" for credible sources.
It really is an art.
Again, for chats where you think the librarian needs guidance, please
contact Diana or Jennifer.
