[Askalibrarianqa] What would you do?

Hi everyone. I loathe when students type in questions directly from
their assignments. One time I had a student who was nice enough to
number their questions 1 - 10. However, I inform them that we do not
answer homework questions but that I can lead them to sites that can
assist them. I do not care if they're from Florida or elsewhere. I
believe Amy erred due to her frustration at the student. Goodness knows
I get very irritated when one question after the other is simply cut and
pasted from the back of a school textbook. I'm sure Amy is a very
capable librarian eager to help. We all have our days.

Paula, I completely agree. Please send these examples to Jennifer and
myself so we can follow-up with the librarians individually. This has
been a problem not just with out of state users but library specific
questions within the collaboration. Sessions like this really upset me
personally.
We are going to start trying to re-educate participants on what they can
do for everyone and how to spin things positively for users.

I probably would have given them a website that would help them with
that kind of problem rather than trying to explain how to do it myself,
but sometimes I do if its not busy.
I have absolutely no problem helping patrons from someplace other than
Florida. I figure it is good PR. One of my favorite chats was helping
a student in Venezuela find literary criticism. Because of our Spanish
language database I was able to find some in Spanish which was much
easier for her to use.
I have noticed a few chats where the librarian wasn't very helpful or
sent the patron to their home library a little too quickly, but most
everyone seems to go above and beyond.

Subject: [Askalibrarianqa] Introduction
Welcome to our new members Pammy, Andy, Christa and Susan. We are glad
to have you.
I am Paula Schrader and I'm the Outreach Services Librarian for Okaloosa
Walton College (OWC) in Niceville (Ft. Walton Beach/ Destin area). I
have been at OWC nearly five years. I teach a lot of bibliographic
instruction both on campus and at the five education centers in our two
county area. I am also a reference librarian and cover the desk even
when I'm not officially there since my office is right next to the
reference desk. I'm also responsible for our Virtual File (selected
websites) and our Local Librarians group. I have been doing
Ask-A-Librarian for over 4 years and have been on the Quality Assurance
committee since the beginning when we tried to read all the chats! I
like being a part of Ask-A-Librarian because is an important part of
outreach and also for all the learning opportunities.
Before coming to OWC I was a Librarian/Media Specialist at the high
school, middle school and elementary level for 13 years. It's kind of
neat when I see students who I knew as 3rd or 4th graders visiting the
LRC as college students. I've been married to my husband Bob for 30
years and we have two sons and two daughters. Our two youngest are
currently at U of FL, so we have an empty nest for the first time 26
years! Our cat and dog do their best to occupy our time. I enjoy all
kinds of outdoor activities; bicycling, boating, and hiking and I play
racquetball during my lunch hour most days. And of course I love to
read books of all kinds. I have a special interest in children's and
young adult literature and have just finished my goal of reading all of
the Newberry Award books, at least until next year.
I've lived in the Florida Panhandle for the past 20 years. I grew up
in northern Illinois, got my bachelor's degree from the University of
Wyoming and my MLS from Western Kentucky University.
I look forward to working with you,
Paula
