[Askalibrarianqa] Reading Next Set of Chats

I've already read through my day's chats and nominated a brief and
detailed chat. I didn't see a teaching chat.

If I have time before the deadline I will take a look at some chats from
the beginning of the month.

It's nice to not be the last one getting nominations in this month.

Subject: [Askalibrarianqa] Reading Next Set of Chats

Hi Everyone,

Does everyone feel comfortable about reading transcripts and
nominating now? I am copying and pasting some of the original
instructions that I sent out.

Let me know if anything is unclear.

Pat

When you access toolbox through http://info.askalibrarian.org
<http://info.askalibrarian.org> there are links to the nominating
database and a links to look at a list of the nominations and to
nominate new Chats.

Doug Furiato has not created a way that we can export them here yet
although that is in the works. There is a field for the link to the chat
transcript you are nominating. When others copy and paste the link they
are taken to the Session chats and you login as you do to staff Chat.

To read transcipts, you go to Toolbox, log into the system as though
you were going to staff the service, but click on Session Transcripts
<http://www.askalibrarian.org/flcc2400/vrl_xscripts.asp> instead. To
see a display of 500, you can arrange that display results setting and
then move back to the day when you want to read the transcripts by
clicking next. The transcripts are in order by date.

These are our most basic criteria for judging chats:

* Demonstrated the following qualities: accuracy, authority,
objectivity, currency, and coverage.

* Performed a reference interview with the patron, asking questions to
clarify the information need

* Calls should be answered as quickly as possible while staying
communicative with the user. Try to keep sessions to 20 minutes or less.
"

* "Whenever possible, use information from library resources. "
(Proprietary Databases are better than Google or Yahoo.)

* "Always use a reference source to locate the answer to a question an
always give the caller the name of the source. "

* "If unable to locate an authoritative answer to a question in a timely
fashion, then either get back to the patron in a few hours (do a
follow-up) or refer the question to local library

After all nominations have been entered in our database, including those
from other librarians who choose to submit nominations, the workgroup
sends their votes on the group to me . I tally the votes, and send the
winners of the Exemplary Chats to Diana Sachs to publish.

As members of the QA Workgroup, we have decided not to include ourselves
as nominees.

Below is the schedule of readings for Oct 07.

Collaborative Desk, Academic Desk, and Local Desk readings are included
in our overall readings.

Again, we agreed to read 50 chats from our assigned day and make
nominations. However, if you have more time and want to read the entire
day's chats, that's okay also. If you want to nominate someone from your
own library, that's good. We do not nominate ourselves or other members
of the workgroup.

Sometimes, it is difficult to find a chat in a particular category:
brief, detailed, or teaching. If that happens, then, don't nominate for
that category.
