Several of you have called to report minor problems that add up to a major complaint we're delivering to Time Warner. They are working on the problem and have been authorized to do whatever it takes to fix this.
If you'd like to look at the network in one of the ways we do, you can view graphs of network traffic here:
http://helpdesk.tblc.org/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi?
If you are not on the TBLC WAN, you can use the username "smokeping" and password "many-eyes" when prompted.
I recommend going deep into the menu on the left in order to see full details of the connections you're interested in. Some connections will have more historical data than others. Information on interpreting the graphs is at http://smokeping.trexle.net/doc/reading.en.html , but the basics are this:
The gray smoke represents the variety of network speeds in a sample of 20 pings each 5 minutes.
The height of the colored line represents the median speed.
The color of the colored line represents packet loss (messages that don't arrive, or arrive incomplete). Green is good, and other colors are bad, with relative badness described by the legend underneath the graph.
If you look at the Last 10 Days chart (example: http://helpdesk.tblc.org/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi?target=wan.Dunedin.normal ), you can see that yesterday was the start of serious packet loss -- the Last 10 Days chart shows almost no green for yesterday, whereas it was mostly green in previous days.
These pictures won't solve problems on their own, but they're a way for you to keep track of the network's health along with us, and to have a better idea of the progress Time Warner is making.
Ben
