Mark--this sounds like a good topic to me. At MCC we recently did a =
matrix for computer competencies included in gen ed courses, and we've =
thought about trying to do the same for info lit competencies.
=20
At our library instruction midwinter meeting a librarian said he's doing =
a structured pilot/research study that he intends to publish. He's =
teaching evaluation first, then search techniques. He is able to have =
the students for several sessions, they start with magazines/journals =
scholary, etc. then do a session with internet sites. He feels that if =
they are able to evaluate sources before they go searching they'll make =
better selections.
=20
We've also been discussing whether we really have to try to cover al the =
competencies in a one-time session, or if we should emphaize some in the =
intial sessions, and include more in the advanced courses. I like the =
idea of different types of libraries working together on this and doing =
more with the lifelong learning aspects.
=20
I think many of us would like to work on a more formal study, article =
etc. too.
=20
My schedule is very flexible, but I remember that last time many people =
wanted us to try to provide an optional full-day component, especially =
for people with a long drive, we also talked about a different location.
=20
Since TBLC seems central, would the HCC Brandon campus be better? IS =
ANYONE FROM BRANDON ON THIS LISTSERV?
Other suggestions?
Here are some events we could work into a full day, if we add on to a =
teleconference we could have a breakfast meeting followed by =
teleconference from 12-2.
Friday April 11 Reference Services: Virtual, Digital, and In-Library =
12-2
Friday May 2 Electronic & Networked Information & Databases, Making =
Choices 12-2
    Friday June 6 Part 2 of Electronic & Networked Information 7 =
Databases 12-2
=20
Wed June 4 9-1 Legal Resources for Librarians at Stetson in =
Gulfport, we could meet for lunch then have info lit in afternoon
=20
People could just for info lit, or do both events. With the =
teleconferences, anybody who didn't want to stay could go out for lunch.
and/or meet for breakfast at a restaurant, then go to the library =
hosting the teleconference.

Subject: [infolit] Idea for next meeting discussion

Well, after the last meeting we did not really have an idea for the next =
meeting and we were going to wait and see what came to us. And although =
I have not had a big flash of insight, I do have an idea that has been =
in my mind for a little while and is growing with some discussions that =
are occuring on our campus.

At USF there is starting to be some talk and committees formed about =
revising the general education requirements and some discussion about a =
quality education program geared towards upper level students. Several =
of the librarians here in Tampa went to some of the brainstorming =
sessions and we talked up info lit getting that idea into the mix. =20

These ideas and other I have been having have started me to do something =
about when do we need to teach students about the various concepts of =
info lit. Do we need to throw all the concpets at them when we see them =
as freshman? Or is it better to wait and spread the concepts out, i.e =
evaluation should wait until they have spent sometime becoming =
comfortable with searching. At what stage does a student/person need to =
be skilled with one of the info lit standards.

My other thought is that this might be a perfect place for our various =
institutions to work together as we usher students through life-long =
learning. Maybe we can coordinate a study to see how students do =
research at various levels and how the libraries can insert info lit =
concepts at the right time to aid their research development or some =
such thing.

I am not sure where any of these thoughts are leading, but I did think =
that they might be a good jumping off place to start a discussion as =
well as a place that maybe we can all work towards some of the same =
goals.

What does everyone think? Do we want to schedule a time again soon when =
we can meet as a group? (I for one have not been out to lunch for =
awhile).
