[ipac] Load Balancing

Mary Ellen,

Thanks for that information. It looks to us like this application is just
not the right one for load-balancing. I do like the idea of a hot-swap
though. We currently rely on our ESX-2 images for disaster recovery.

Thanks again for your response,

Brad Bates

Brad,

We used to run two HIPs with a load balancing program that Dynix set up
for us. The URL pointed at one and the load balancing program would then
send it to either HIP1 or HIP2. We quickly ran into problems because
the "My List" info was stored on the HIP server itself, not Horizon. As
you can imagine it was a real nightmare with patrons complaining that
stuff would mysteriously appear and disappear from their lists. We
still run two server but point half of the branches (load-wise, not
number-wise) at one, and the rest at the other. I try and keep the
configurations close, if not exact, and store copies of both of the
ipacadmin.gdb files on each server so if one when totally belly up we
could use the other. We learned quickly that keeping them the same by
copying the ipacadmin.gdb was not the way to go, as the statistics on
the second server would be overwritten.

I can see that it would be even worse on 4.x, since the user logins are
stored on HIP as well. We haven't taken the plunge and are still on
3.06a, or something like that.

Regards, Mary Ellen

Greetings,

Is anyone out there using two HIP systems? If so, do you have details
on
how the second system is setup to avoid problems that affect the other
system. And, do you use a load-balancing scheme for two or more
systems?

Thanks in advance,
