This error means just what it says. If you used an editor to make the file change you must has cut out some "white space" i.e. spaces in the file. If you revert to your old file the error should go away. Then you can add the code again, but make sure to not paste over any spaces in the file. XSL files don't like it if you cut out their white space. Yes, I learned this the hard way!
If you don't have a file to revert to, let me know off list and I can probably email you a correction.

I'm not sure what the error message means but make sure you didn't drop
off a piece of the tracking script (6 lines). I don't get any errors.

Where exactly does the GA script go? I just put it in generalfooter.xsl at
the end and got an error message. I moved it around a bit and got different
errors. Since there's no /body tag, I was guessing and not particularly
lucky.

We just entered the base URL of our catalogue into the GA tool, for example
http://siris-libraries.si.edu/. Hope that helps.

I'm curious about this method of logging so I just set up GA and also put
the script in the generalfooter.xsl. I was not exactly sure what url to
enter in the GA setup so I used our Keyword search page. Is this right?

Hello folks,
After seeing an earlier post to the list about options for Web monitoring, I
went and signed up for using Google Analytics to track our HIP traffic.
I grabbed their "tracking script" and popped it in what I thought would be
the correct stylesheet (searchresponse.xsl), but I've found that Google
still doesn't "see" that the script has been installed yet.
Can anyone using this tool on their HIP tell me which stylesheets you popped
the script into? I'd be most appreciative.
