As honorary perennial past president of CODI (the original version), I
metaphorically rise to offer a virtual toast to Eileen on this auspicious
occasion as she swims away from the good ship CODI.
It was many years ago, when I noticed a young, shy woman attend her first
CODI conference in Salt Lake City. She spoke knowledgably and politely and
asked pertinent questions about vendor-client relations. As the official
past president and chair of the nominating committee, it behooved me to suck
her into the bitter and angry world of the executive committee. Little did
I realize what force was being unleashed upon the organization.
Her first important decision was to festoon us with flamingoes and attempt a
users conference in a partially completed hotel in Tampa. Several false
fire alarms and many adventures with incomplete plumbing later, CODI
adjourned with all members educated to a peaceful year of reorganization (or
a total train wreck, depending upon your perspective). As reward for
volunteering to serve one year as president, Eileen was given eighteen
additional months of painful service.
After this moment of calm, Eileen decided to migrate to Horizon, a simple
process that required entry of every code by hand, since there were no
wizards to convert ITYPE's, PTYE's, Collection Codes, ISTAT's and PSTAT's
into Horizon counterparts. Eileen shared her perspective with all in
Orlando in 2002 at the first joint HUG and CODI conference. She drew the
attention of the HUG Board there and before you knew it, Eileen was on that
Board, too. By the time we merged into the new CODI, Eileen was on the way
to her second go-round as President. (Does she never learn?)
We now see her swimming from our ship. Let us raise our virtual glasses and
listen to the ship's orchestra intone its symphony. Salute our friend as
she sails toward the north star. May her new ship avoid the icebergs!
Who's running the betting pool on how many years before she gets suckered
into elected office in that user group?
