[ipac] HIP searches and indexes

Yes, you have to create a HIP keyword index for each keyword search type.
Since you can use fields in the item record to create search limits (e.g., by location or collection), I believe some sites tried using item_status but to no avail. Part of the problem [I think] is that a change to item_status does NOT write the record to word_index_pending-HIP reads this to update its indexes, limits, etc. Someone else should chime in if this indeed works.
The HIP keyword indexes are all set up in word_index, then you must run massindexer to create them, then you must import them for use in HIP via the HIP Admin Tool. I THINK by now this process is reasonably well documented (I could be wrong about that). Remember that the Horizon keyword indexes are NOT used in HIP; Horizon browse indexes MAY be used in HIP-but they are set up as mq_indexes-another kettle of fish.
Good luck!

Subject: [ipac] HIP searches and indexes
I have some questions about HIP searches and indexes. When we migrated to Horizon, SirsiDynix staff created some format-specific browse searches in Horizon, which we also use in HIP. However, now our patrons want format keyword searches, not browse searches. For example, we have separate browse searches for Abridged books on CD and Unabridged books on CD.
Now staff are telling us that patrons want more format-specific searches, such as Title KW books on Abridged CD, Subject KW books on Unabridged CD, etc. Do I have to create indexes for each keyword search that patrons want?
Also, patrons want to have a search that includes only items that are on the shelf. Is it possible to combine bib and item data, such as item status, in a pre-defined search? If so, how would we accomplish this?
My apologies for being so dumb about this. I just don't have a good understanding of how the Horizon and HIP indexes are setup and work together. This is the first time we have tried to create our own indexes since we migrated to Horizon. After 4 years, I finally have the nerve (and the time) to start playing with indexes.
Thanks so much!
Barbara
