Subject: Graduate training of future professionals
Dear Laura,
=20
I just read with great interest your FLAM post on the above subject. I =
am so glad that you shared with other FLAM subscribers the summary =
discussion from one of the sessions at the AAM conference in Portland. =
I would like to learn more about your conference experience. I am a =
member of the Florida Association of Museums (FAM) but have not yet =
attended one of their conferences (next one is this Sept), nor have I =
attended an AAM conference. Your post is just what we need to foster =
dialogue, creativity, and collaboration among librarians, museum =
practitioners, and educators. The reasons given for study of cultural =
heritage (CH) issues show that CH stimulates one's growth and =
effectiveness not only as a professional, but also as an enlightened =
human being.
=20
Dr. McCook tells me that you are currently a student in her CH graduate =
course, which I took last summer. I want to reinforce her suggestion =
that you write about your experiences, observations, and reflections for =
publication in Library Sci and Museum Studies publications. With Dr. =
McCook's encouragement and advice (she is a wonderful mentor!), I began =
doing this last summer. One article was published last fall in Florida =
Libraries, and another will be published this summer in Community & =
Junior College Libraries. We also have a new Museums & CH Interest =
Group in the Florida Library Association and a Museums & Libraries Group =
in the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. CH has become a passion in my =
life, and I sense that it may be for you also.
=20
Many thanks for your FLAM post. You are one of just a few people who =
can offer the integrated perspective of someone cross-trained in the two =
fields. You are in a position to contribute a great deal to =
collaboration and possibly curriculum change to better prepare today's =
students for their professional responsibilities in a multicultural, =
pluralistic society.
=20
Regards,
Carmine Bell
