Position: Librarian (Reference) Category: Regular
Series/Grade: NF-1410-IV Salary: $16.05 - $45.04
Location: MacDill Library
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs oversight of all circulation, public service, and technical service
functions, reporting problems/discrepancies and possible solutions to the
supervisory librarian. Serves as alternate point of contact for
partnerships/networks with local, state, and regional organizations.
Coordinates with the on-base academic community to acquire/make available
reference and support materials needed to support academic goals and school
accreditation. Provides reference and research services for office mission
and academic support as required. Teaches library skills, basic research
techniques, and reference interview skills to library staff. Assists the
supervisory librarian in providing reference and research services to
library customers. Analyzes user requirements through customer interview or
written requests. Devises standard search strategies by accessing available
information resources, on-line computer databases, etc. Conducts
cost-efficient computer inquiries of a variety of databases appropriate to
the type of information required. Develops reading lists and subject
bibliographies which may be annotated to meet user requirements. Performs
abstracting and indexing duties to meet non-specialized user needs.
Explains arrangement and resources of the library and teaches library skills
and research techniques to library customers. Participates in evaluating
the collection to determine materials needed, reviews collection for
replacement of obsolete and worn materials, recommends changes to collection
management policies, and reviews bibliographies, book reviews, and other
sources to recommend acquisition of materials. Performs original
cataloging, subject analysis, and classification assignment in
machine-readable cataloging format within the standards of the current
Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and
Dewey Decimal Classification system and by comparison to the local database
and authority file. Develops and implements long-range automation plans for
the library within the parameters defined by the supervisory librarian.
Provides input into marketing plan and participates in developing in
identifying target customers, assessing their needs, and informing them of
available resources and services. Participates in developing the annual
publicity plan to promote use of library resources and services among the
academic community, commanders, military dependents, and other eligible
users. Writes news articles and coordinates their release to inform
customers of available resources. May act in the absence of the supervisor.
Qualifications:
A Master¹s Degree in Library and Information Studies from an American
Library Association accredited school is required. Additionally, one year
progressively responsible work experience is desired. Professional
knowledge of standard methods, techniques, concepts, and principles of one
or more specialty areas of librarianship is required. Knowledge of on-line
database searching and research techniques. Skill and knowledge in
utilizing computer databases containing various reference materials.
Knowledge of information retrieval technology, particularly as it relates to
acquisitions, serial control, cataloging, and optical disk storage of
documents. Ability to evaluate software for library applications and to
recognize probable conflicts. Knowledge of standard methods, techniques,
tools, concepts, and principles to perform independent assignments, assess
materials, recommend suitable selections for collection, determine those
items suitable for removal, and recommend solutions to problems. Knowledge
of established procurement rules and regulations and internal organizational
acquisition policies. Familiarity with publishers¹ and suppliers¹ methods
of operation. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Other
