The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine invites applications
from creative, energetic, service- and team-oriented leaders to serve on
the faculty of the Louis Calder Memorial Library as Director for Library
Collections.
Located in sub-tropical, metropolitan Miami, the University of
Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center has internationally renowned
medical and graduate education programs, patient care services and
research programs. They include the Regional Campus at Boca Raton,
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami Institute for Human Genomics,
Diabetes Research Institute, Miami Project to Cure Paralysis,
Comprehensive AIDS Program, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and
the new University of Miami Hospital.
The Louis Calder Memorial Library serves the Miller School of Medicine,
graduate programs, the University of Miami Health System and Jackson
Health System. The Library has excellent electronic resources,
including a growing cadre of decision support tools, 37 FTE faculty and
staff, visionary leadership and ever-expanding partnerships throughout
the University and South Florida community. The Library reports to the
Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Miller School
of Medicine. This position reports to the Director for Library

The Director for Library Collections Resources has responsibility for:
* Direct supervision of the Head of Acquisitions/Serials and two
assistants
* Electronic journal, database and book collection development,
including selecting appropriate titles for purchase, negotiating
licenses and monitoring use
* Print book and journal collection development, including selecting
appropriate print books for purchase and overseeing approval plans,
cancelling print journal subscriptions, weeding print book and journal
collections and managing the rare book and historical collections
* Cooperative arrangements with other units of the University of Miami
Library System and reporting holdings to Docline
* Financial oversight of collection development budget of more than $2
million
* Coordination with Cataloging and Archives for operation of Library
Collection and Technical Services Division, including the integrated
library system and other automated systems
* Coordination with Director for Systems and Interlibrary Loan for
linking electronic resources to databases and systems
* Coordination with Director for Reference, Education and Outreach for
scholarly communication activities, including promoting and implementing
open access initiatives, the NIH Public Access Policy, etc
* Serving on the Library's senior management team
* Professional involvement in local, regional and national
organizations, including presentations and publications
The successful applicant will have:
* An ALA accredited masters in library/information science
* Previous experience in collection development in an academic setting,
with particular emphasis on scientific/technical/medical electronic
resources
* Previous administrative experience and ability to work effectively as
a team member and individually
* Demonstrated initiative, outgoing personality, exceptional service
orientation, and excellent interpersonal, communications and
organizational skills
Highly desirable qualifications include evaluation techniques and
processes for collections and services, knowledge of scholarly
communication and experience teaching on the graduate level.
