Suncoast Information Specialists will have it's next meeting next week at CAE, on Thursday, February 26, 2009. It will be a great opportunity to visit with other information professionals at this fun and informative event, and to learn something new about what's happening in our field. As always, visitors are welcome. Please pass this message on to others in your organization who might be interested. SIS Meeting Information
      What: February SIS Meeting, Catered Dinner 
      When:
     Thursday, February 26, 2009 (guests are always welcome)
     
      Program: Thanks for This Assignment! - A Research Paper Students (Eventually) Love.

      Come learn about an innovative collaboration between an academic librarian and an English faculty for teaching research and writing.

      Alicia Ellison, Librarian, and Judith Nolasco, English Faculty, of Hillsborough Community College � Ybor City Campus, will discuss their project that encourages critical thinking, reduces plagiarism, utilizes technology, and leads students to connect academics, work, and life. This method abandons traditional research topics and takes students on a journey to their futures.

      Although the project was designed for Freshman English-II classes, Alicia and Judy will offer strategies for adapting this approach for research assignments in other disciplines.

      Sample papers, survey results, assessment data, and feedback from students and faculty will be shared.

      Handouts that detail the assignment, an online library research toolkit, and their own published articles on the project will be provided. Participants will have ample opportunity to ask questions about the assignment and discuss why this new approach works.

     5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
      5:30 - 6:00: Meet and greet, networking
      6:00 - 8:00: Meal and business meeting. The program will begin after the business meeting.

      A tour of the CAE facility and the library will be offered before the meeting on Feb 26. If you are interested in seeing the facility, let me know. A tour group will leave from the front lobby at 4:45 PM. Please be a few minutes early to allow for time to sign in with the receptionist.
     
      Food: Catered buffet, $10.00. The meal is optional; however if you RSVP to eat, please consider it an obligation to pay even if you cannot make the meeting. 
      RSVP: Send RSVPs to kingbet at tampabay.rr.com or leave a voice mail at 813-887-1658 no later than Monday, Monday 23, 2009. Late reservations will be accepted only as space allows. Please indicate whether you will be eating also. 
      Directions:  The CAE facility is a secured facility, so all attendees must enter the front lobby between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served beginning at 6 p.m. If you can not make it prior to 6:00 p.m., please contact Betsy to make advance arrangements. Anyone arriving late can still get into the building. However, those who anticipate getting here after 6:00 should let Betsy know in advance if possible, so we can be on the lookout for them.

      CAE is in Tampa, about 2 miles north of Tampa International Airport, near the southeast corner of Anderson Road and Waters Avenue, at the corner of Savarese Circle and Tampa West Blvd., in Tampa West Industrial Park. The Park is accessible from either Waters Avenue or Anderson Boulevard. Contact Betsy for detailed instructions.
