I. Introductions
II. Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the meeting of August 11, 2000 were approved.
III Announcements and Updates
The Web pages are still in progress.
Carol Ann Borchert wrote the support letter from the SIG for the
St. Petersburg Public Library's grant, as suggested in the minutes from
August 11th.
Rodrigo Diaz had heard about something happening on October 22nd regarding
diversity and immigration issues and WMNF (88.5 FM). Shannon
Bennett-Manross called during the break to get information about this and
discovered that it is a radio program on that date. They are planning a
community forum, which is currently still in the concept stages. We may
want to participate in this once more information is available.
IV General Pathfinder Listing Services Available in Most Libraries
This was a continuation of the discussion from August 11th. Rodrigo Diaz
had sent Carol Ann flyers which we passed around, and Kurt Jasielonis
found a listing of Spanish-English vocabulary from The U*N*A*B*A*S*H*E*D
Librarian which were handed out.
The idea is to create a template of general library services that
libraries can fill in and print out. This would be for patrons who are
not familiar with the general types of services and information available
in the library. This could include immigrants or visitors from other
countries, whose experiences with libraries may have been very different
from what it would be here. For instance, in most U.S. libraries, patrons
can walk to the shelf and retrieve a book themselves, instead of waiting
for someone else to do it for them. Information which might be included
would be:
cards and some services are free
hours
address/location
variety of formats and materials
computer access
special programming (children, elder services, literacy, GED
programs, Spanish language)
populations served
volunteer opportunities
inter-library loan services
community organization databases
loan policy
able to retrieve book and take home for several days
link to TBLC language bank
We could do this in English, then later translate to Spanish and
French. Perhaps some of the librarians who are listed in the language
bank could proofread filled-out forms in other languages.
Other items:
Kathleen de la Pena McCook discussed the 211 number approved by the FCC as
of July 21, 2000. This will be a human services toll-free
number. Kathleen will forward information to the group on this topic as
it becomes available. There is also more information at their Web
site: http://www.211.org. How can libraries fit into this? Information
and retrieval services?
Carol Ann gave an update on the REFORMA de Florida activities. They are
planning a meeting for November, probably on the east coast.
Kathleen also mentioned that Guerena's new edition of Latino Librarianship
is now available.
The next meeting is scheduled for DECEMBER 8, 2000 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at
TBLC headquarters.
The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
V Guest speaker
Unfortunately, the representative for our guest speaker from the Asian
Family and Community Empowerment group arrived after most everyone had
already left. Materials on this organization will be available at the
next meeting.
