Catalogers,
Please excuse the duplication from Autocat. However, I did want to throw
in my 2 cents!

I continuously sing the praises of the memory of Dr. Larry Chrisman,
University of South Florida SLIS, who taught me the foundation of this
great cataloging profession while actually making it FUN and EXCITING. He
was my inspiration. He was the very best library science teacher that I
had in the program at USF SLIS not only because he was a great mentor, and
a kind person, but he also was a full-time cataloger. There is an abyss
between those educators who keep up with the theoretical trends merely from
the vantage points of their ivory towers and those who keep up with the
trends from where the rubber meets the road in the real world and are
actually doing the work. Dr. Chrisman was one of the real world catalogers
who taught us from the trenches, and he passed on his passion for
cataloging. He brought in real world cataloging problems.
Dr. Chrisman had such a vast knowledge that he could speak on many topics,
relating them back to the details of cataloging, all while teaching us the
greater lessons in life such as: Don't take yourself too seriously! Enjoy
your life! Play! Laugh! Love! Dare to do original thinking! Care about
others! Share! Take time to be with the most important people in your
life. Take time out to enjoy a good movie! Take time to enjoy good music!
Your cats are your best friends -- be good to them! Life's too short.
Even though he has been gone for nearly a decade, there is rarely a workday
that goes by that I do not think of Dr. Chrisman. I owe much of my passion
for this great art of cataloging to Dr. Chrisman. He was one of the best!
