The Amazing World of Manga and Graphic Novels

You demanded it! You got it! Join librarians Kevin Griffith and Paul
Stonebridge for a rousing return engagement of this popular pop culture
workshop. It's bigger! It's better! It's been expanded by popular
demand!

In this fast-paced and informal full day workshop we'll explore the
world-spanning history of comics - Prehistoric cave paintings! Wall art
of the pharaohs! Medieval Tapestries! And more!

We'll cover in detail the political, social, and cultural factors that
influenced comics in both the US and Japan - Technological advances!
Colonialism! The Great Depression! World War II! The Kefauver hearings
in the U.S Senate! Censorship! Censorship! Censorship! Those rascally
hippies! The Japanese culture invasion! Girl power! And more!

While it's true that you can still find hordes of bulging heroes swathed
in spandex in today's comics, more and more often you'll find stories
running the gamut from the innocent to the outrageous, from the sweetly
sentimental to the hair-raising. There are literally thousands of
graphic novels and manga to choose from! And they're always checked out!
What can library staff do when faced with suchdaunting dilemmas?

Never fear! Not only will we teach you everything we know about comics,
but we'll also help prepare you to meet the collection development
challenges facing every library that wants to get the most for its pop
culture dollar.

We'll give an overview of what's available currently - including small
press comics, independent comics, comics from the major publishers,
manga, and more.

We'll go over the connection between film and funny books. And we'll
answer any and all questions you might have concerning this incredibly
huge and incredibly incredible topic.

Join us!

Bio:Kevin Griffith is the Adult Services Coordinator for the Pasco

adulthood.
