Analyzing Library Collection Use with Excel
Collection development expert Tony Greiner (co-author of "Analyzing
Library Collection Use with Excel", ALA Editions, 2007) will show you
how to use Excel to translate circulation and collection data into
meaningful reports for making collection management decisions. Learn
step-by-step instructions to quickly "crunch the numbers" that often bog
down library use studies.
In this workshop you'll learn how to:
* Process raw data into usable information, such as average use,
median age, percentage of recent titles, etc.
* Understand the varieties of possible analyses
* Identify the most relevant types of analysis for your collection
* Identify weaknesses and build on the strengths identified in
your collection
* Illustrate circulation data using charts and graphs that can be
displayed to managers and boards
Librarians responsible for collection development in public, school,
academic, and special libraries will learn why analyzing collection use
is important and how they can analyze that use to better serve their
patrons. Attendees will use computers with Excel to run analyses of use
of a real library collection.
Presenter's bio: Anthony Greiner has been a librarian about 15 years,
working in special libraries (the Minnesota Historical Society) and
several Public Libraries. For balance, he is currently at an academic
library at Portland Community College. He has written articles that
appeared in Library Journal and Public Libraries, and he is coauthor of
the 2007 ALA Editions title Analyzing Library Collection Use with Excel.
He has given this workshop in Orange Park, Fla., and is booked to give
it in Portland, Ore., Tampa, West Palm Beach and Miami. He will also
present an online version for the Ontario Library Association in July
and will teach a "Collection Development" class for Emporia State
University's Oregon cohort this summer.
