Time to Sign with Babies

Participants will learn to teach sign language to preverbal babies in a
fun and educational way through the use of songs, games, stories and
more. Our program is designed for instruction of all children: hearing,
hard of hearing, deaf and children with disabilities.

Incorporating sign language into you regular children's library programs

Participants will learn to incorporate basic sign language stories,
songs and games into regular children's library programs and story
times. Introducing sign language to children will raise communication
awareness and abilities, will enable them to faster learning and better
word retention and will build confidence. Remember that children enjoy
communicating in a physical way. It's fun!

Programs will include:

Sign language information, alphabet, animals, colors, numbers, manners,
emotions, feelings, fruits and vegetables and daily functional signs
(needs, wants, etc.). Participants will receive sign language handouts
that will include benefits of signing, research studies, useful websites
and teaching resources.

Research has shown that children who sign are less frustrated since they
have a way of expressing their wants and needs. Simply put, they cry
less. But even more amazingly, children who are taught a few simple
signs not only speak earlier than non-signers, but also have larger
vocabularies and become better readers. It has to do with stimulating
more synapses of the brain. Signing babies have IQs that are 10-12
points higher than non-signing children do.

Presenter: Rosa Rodriguez, MS, CRC. Deaf Literacy Coordinator

Rosa was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Her work with the Deaf began in
1992 after conducting a project for a Special Education class. After
volunteering at a local Deaf church and learning sign language, she
attended the Orientation to Deafness program in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Rosa became immersed in the Deaf culture and was encouraged to apply for
a Master's Degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling for the Deaf.
While obtaining her Master's Degree she worked at the Tennessee School
for the Deaf as a Youth Service Worker. She then came to Florida for her
internship with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the
National Mental Health Institute on Deafness. Rosa has worked as a case
manager, social worker and rehabilitation counselor and teacher of the
Deaf. She is now the Deaf Literacy Coordinator for the Pinellas Public
Library Cooperative where she teaches basic literacy skills to Deaf and
Hard of Hearing students and sign language classes to the community,
presents parenting and family programs and assists with the development
of a specialized Deaf Collection of Library materials.
