From McLeanV at tblc.org Tue Nov 3 10:26:35 2009 From: McLeanV at tblc.org (Vikki McLean) Date: Tue, 3 Nov 2009 10:26:35 -0500 Subject: [TBLC-Workshops] FEL - Gale Health Related Information Pilot Kick-Off Meeting @ TBLC - 11-10-09 - 8:30 - 12:30 Message-ID: <69FDF3BECCCBAB41ABBCD23E23585294059A84C3@EXCHANGE.tblc.local> TBLC Workshop Announcement FEL - Gale Health Related Information Pilot Kick-Off Tuesday November 10, 2009 - 8:30 - 12:30 In January of 2008 Gale and the Florida Electronic Library office at the State Library signed a Statement of Understanding to launch a pilot program in the state which will bring a new level of health related information to libraries across the state. "Gale and FEL will work together to develop a tool that makes it easier for people to make their real-life health and wellness decisions and for Florida librarians to support them. This tool should be the bridge between basic health reference information and the various support services available in one's own community - it should connect people to actual health services." (Statement of Understanding) This pilot product concept uses much of the content you are used to seeing in Gale's Health & Wellness Resource Center as a base. It will add to that foundation new content like results from trusted, vetted websites, podcasts, and blogs and a significant new suite of tools designed to help people find and then make sense of complex health information. Available alongside this collection will also be information about locally available services. The result is a more holistic "Knowledge Portal" providing authoritative content and local services all in one location. Last spring Gale's Kate Hanley and their strategic initiatives consultant, Kate Duval conducted a variety of focus groups in various locations across the state. Some of you may have participated in one of these sessions. The publishers at Gale want to have a thorough understanding of the challenges we are facing today in our libraries when patrons come to us with health related questions. The goal Gale has set for this product is to provide comprehensive solutions to meet the needs of both the patrons and library staff serving the community. A lot of time and attention is being spent on the product design in order to make it as easy to use as possible. The design is a fairly radical departure from the tabs featured in HWRC today. Instead, the idea is to create rich collections of content in portal pages. Arranging content in this way helps users to quickly see both the breadth and depth of information available to them. Gale understands that consumers are trying to take more responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. They also understand that patrons are turning to librarians to help find the information they need to support this effort. This new Health and Wellness Knowledge Portal will provide all Floridians with exceptional resources at their fingertips from home, their office, or in their local libraries. On Tuesday, November 10th we will be hosting a kick off meeting at the TBLC offices. Gale and FEL are looking for 2 or possibly 3 libraries to conduct the first wave of pilot testing of this new knowledge portal. The libraries of TBLC have been identified as providing a good degree of demographic diversity. This kick off meeting will serve to provide all of the TBLC libraries with background information and pilot program detail which we hope will lead to 2 or 3 libraries volunteering to participate in the initial pilot program which will begin in the first few months of 2010. The product will then be used in the pilot libraries for several weeks by both librarians and patrons. Gale will be looking to receive thorough feedback and advice about: * How to complete the product with as much of the necessary content (localized a and general) ; * Any suggestions for improving the user experience for both the patrons and library staff; * Ideas for getting the word out across the state when the knowledge portal is launched statewide so that all residents of Florida know that this resource is available to them. There may be a second phase of the pilot program once the initial libraries have had an opportunity to use it and provide their feedback. It is very important to Gale to have as much information as possible before the product is launched statewide so the schedule for rolling out the product past the initial pilot program will remain a bit flexible. The goal however, will be to provide a statewide launch at some point next summer. Your participation in the November 10th meeting will be greatly appreciated and your consideration to be one of the pilot program libraries is encouraged. Message-ID: <69FDF3BECCCBAB41ABBCD23E23585294059A8870@EXCHANGE.tblc.local> TBLC ANNOUNCEMENT Announcing the Florida Electronic Library's New Training Program for Librarians! The Florida Electronic Library - your gateway to superior electronic resources that offer access to comprehensive, accurate, and reliable information - is pleased to announce a new training program available to all Florida librarians. The primary objective of this program is to provide librarians with innovative learning courses that educate users on the features, functionality, and overall value of the FEL product suite provided by Gale. This learning program is intended to be highly flexible and interactive, addressing the immediate learning needs of the audience, and providing a comprehensive learning experience for all of the FEL's electronic resources provided by Gale. About the FEL Training Curriculum: The Florida Electronic Library recognizes that its end users have two main training needs: * Quick access to information in order to facilitate their immediate learning objectives, and * A formal curriculum path to help them gain a deeper, richer understanding of the FEL product suite. Based on these learning needs, the FEL training has been designed as a blended curriculum, providing a three-pronged approach to multimedia learning. The three components are: * "On-Demand" instruction, which provides knowledge-based learning in a comprehensive, Web-based, self-study format. All courses will be available as interactive webcasts to be used at the participant's leisure for self-guided instruction. Courses will offer a table of contents to allow users to jump ahead to sections where they have questions and move back to review as needed. If users require more information, they may move on to the deeper coverage of training materials in the webinar or on-site instruction modules. * "Webinar" instruction, which provides a more tactical learning experience, using Web seminar technology that allows participants to interact with an instructor in real time. Web-based, instructor-led training will expand the reach of on-demand training tools. Sessions will allow for interaction with the instructor along with live demonstration of e-resources. A multidisciplinary overview will be provided, with an emphasis on how each of the e-resources practically applies to possible reference desk questions. * "On-Site" learning, which consists of on-site, instructor-led training that will expand the reach of the on-demand and webinar training. These expanded courses will provide interactive, hands-on instruction with independent activity time. Questions and "How would I...?" situations are encouraged to customize the workshop to the needs of the participants. Course Offerings: The following courses have been identified as key subject areas for the initial launch of the FEL training program: * The World of FEL/Gale Resources: A General Product Overview * Homework Help: Using FEL Resources * Patron Outreach: Creating Easy Access and Increasing Usage of FEL Resources * A Healthy Perspective: Health Research Using FEL Resources * FEL QuickStart: General and Academic OneFile Searches * The Power of Web 2.0: Best Practices Using FEL Resources * Getting Down to Business: Effective Use of FEL Business Resources * Following the Trends: Understanding FEL Reports and Analysis Data * Making It Personal: Customizing Your FEL Products How to Register: All registrations for these workshops must be done at the State Library's website. Email has brought about many improvements in the way we communicate in the workplace. It's quicker than inter-library mail, less intrusive than a phone call, and it can be an efficient way to keep track of the correspondence details. When used improperly, however, email can be an impediment to your career and your library's organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Managing your inbox and replying in a timely manner is a critical part of managing your communication with others. Do you feel "Buried in Email?" Do you have an effective way to organize and process your emails? Most people don't. This webinar gives you the information and proven strategies you need to effectively manage your emails once and for all. Did you know that email can be one of the most misunderstood communication tools that we use? Why? Because many times, email messages are poorly written and the receiver has not been given the information they need. By the end of the webinar participants will learn and begin to master: * Using a decision making process for managing email * Scheduling uninterrupted time to process and organize email daily * Organizing Logins and Passwords * Writing Subject Lines that attract the recipient to open your email * Keeping the message focused and readable * The difference between formal and informal email writing * Easy steps to proofreading email * Email Etiquette for managing incoming and outgoing email Speaker: Andrew Sanderbeck The Florida Department of State is not affiliated with this Webinar. While the library and academic communities once felt that they had a good grasp on legal and ethical use of protected materials, recent changes in law and important court cases, as well as aggressive legal actions, have put librarians on edge. Knowing what copyright entails and how to deal with the most basic copyright situations in a library can help a library avoid the more common copyright risks. This short course doesn't purport to cover every possible copyright situation in a library. Given the limited time frame, we will only discuss basics. However, with this foundation you will be able to better understand what you read regarding copyright and make decisions that are based on solid baseline information, not rumor or possibly erroneous "common knowledge." While copyright may not always be intuitive, it is current federal law. It isn't optional, and it isn't easy. Taking some time to read, discuss, and develop an understanding of the topic is essential to protecting yourself and your library from potential legal action. Best of luck on your first steps of this challenging, but interesting, journey. Objectives After completing this course, you will understand the following objectives: * Identify the origin and history of copyright * List and describe the six rights of a copyright holder * Explain fair use laws * Present several ways copyright affects public library service * Locate online and print resources on copyright when confronted with questions or concerns This is a self-paced training course offered through LE at D.
