<p>In January of 2008 Gale and the Florida Electronic Library office at the
State Library signed a Statement of Understanding to launch a pilot program
in the state which will bring a new level of health related information to
libraries across the state. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p>“Gale and FEL will work together to develop a tool that makes it easier for
people to make their real-life health and wellness decisions and for Florida
librarians to support them. This tool should be the bridge between basic
health reference information and the various support services available in
one’s own community – it should connect people to actual health services.”

<p>This pilot product concept uses much of the content you are used to seeing
in Gale’s Health & Wellness Resource Center as a base. It will add to
that foundation new content like results from trusted, vetted websites,
podcasts, and blogs and a significant new suite of tools designed to help
people find and then make sense of complex health information. Available
alongside this collection will also be information about locally available
services. The result is a more holistic “Knowledge Portal” providing
authoritative content and local services all in one location.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Last spring Gale’s Kate Hanley and their strategic initiatives consultant,
Kate Duval conducted a variety of focus groups in various locations across
the state. Some of you may have participated in one of these sessions. The
publishers at Gale want to have a thorough understanding of the challenges we
are facing today in our libraries when patrons come to us with health related
questions. The goal Gale has set for this product is to provide comprehensive
solutions to meet the needs of both the patrons and library staff serving the
community.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>A lot of time and attention is being spent on the product design in order
to make it as easy to use as possible. The design is a fairly radical
departure from the tabs featured in HWRC today. Instead, the idea is to
create rich collections of content in portal pages. Arranging content in this
way helps users to quickly see both the breadth and depth of information
available to them. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Gale understands that consumers are trying to take more responsibility for
their own health and wellbeing. They also understand that patrons are turning
to librarians to help find the information they need to support this effort.
This new Health and Wellness Knowledge Portal will provide all Floridians
with exceptional resources at their fingertips from home, their office, or in
their local libraries.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>On Tuesday, November 10th we will be hosting a kick off meeting at the
TBLC offices. Gale and FEL are looking for 2 or possibly 3 libraries to
conduct the first wave of pilot testing of this new knowledge portal. The
libraries of TBLC have been identified as providing a good degree of
demographic diversity. This kick off meeting will serve to provide all of the
TBLC libraries with background information and pilot program detail which we
hope will lead to 2 or 3 libraries volunteering to participate in the initial
pilot program which will begin in the first few months of 2010. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p>The product will then be used in the pilot libraries for several weeks by
both librarians and patrons. Gale will be looking to receive thorough
feedback and advice about:<o:p></o:p></p>

<p>There may be a second phase of the pilot program once the initial
libraries have had an opportunity to use it and provide their feedback. It is
very important to Gale to have as much information as possible before the
product is launched statewide so the schedule for rolling out the product
past the initial pilot program will remain a bit flexible. The goal however,
will be to provide a statewide launch at some point next summer. <o:p></o:p></p>
